The Legend of Danny Boy is a story about mining in the old west and in particular the story of an Irish lassie by the name of Jess Weatherly who lived in Ouray, Colorado. The show is styled after an Irish ceilidh (kay-lee) which was the traditional house party of the Irish that featured song, poetry, dance, and storytelling. As the story progresses, it moves from Ireland to California and then to Southwest Colorado. The show tells the true story behind the iconic Irish song Danny Boy. There is more to this beloved song than meets the eye. When the local contribution to this ballad comes to light, there will be a renewed appreciation of this Irish classic. This is a fun, fast-moving, family-friendly show that features a full Irish band and a Seanchaí  (an Irish storyteller). The audience will not be mere spectators, they will be part of the show, because…it’s a ceilidh!  You will be strongly encouraged to cut loose and have fun!

CJ ALDERTON, the Lead Writer for our show, lays down the guitar work for the local Celtic band Patrick Crossing where he also provides lead and back-up vocals. He is the President of the Durango Celtic Society and the wildly successful Durango Celtic Festival which takes place each March here at the Henry Strater Theatre. Last year, CJ was the Grand Prize winner of the world renowned Durango Arts Center Short Play Contest with a work entitled: Aengus & D’Arcy On A Bench In Dublin.

SHIELA LANE, the Musical Director for our show, has been a musician since she was five years old, including playing piano, flute, and singing. She discovered the Irish penny whistles in 1997 and later took a trip to Ireland to discover more about Celtic music and to learn the various stylings. Currently a member of Patrick Crossing Celtic Band, she brings energy to the stage with her incredible whistling skills, lead and backup vocals and original compositions to the stage.

BRIN DEVORE, is happy to call Durango home. She graduated from Fort Lewis College in 2016, and has been in many local shows, most recently playing Ulla in “The Producers,” and Janet in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Her lovely soprano voice has earned her rave reviews in the Durango area. Her red hair and green eyes are a bonus! From Brin: “Enjoy the show, get rowdy, and do a merry little Irish jig!”

DENNON JONES began playing the violin in school orchestra in the small town of Nederland Colorado. He is a student at Fort Lewis College where he is studying Music Education. While he plays and respects the classical traditions his heart has always belonged to the fiddle much more than the violin – which means Celtic and Bluegrass. He has traveled widely throughout Ireland and Scotland, playing in the local Pubs for tips or a pint…or pints. He is currently an instructor for the Be Frank Foundation whose mission is to raise up the next generation of great musicians.

RILEY ALDERTON, the Assistant Writer for our show, grew up in Durango, CO and is a graduate of Fort Lewis College. He is a 4th grade teacher here in Durango and recently completed his Master’s Degree in Leadership. Riley serves as the Emcee for the annual Durango Celtic Festival. Among his many accomplishments he wanted to mention that he had a lead role in a play when he was in the 2nd grade entitled: Peanuts & Popcorn, although he forgot one of his three lines.

BOB CONDON has been playing the bodhran since the late ’70s where he developed his skills in traditional Irish sessions. From there, he was recruited to play with various local bands; Harvest Home, Claddagh, Eugene Byrne and Co., John Cochran Band and the Chieftains.  Bob is a long time member of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, an Irish Music organization.  A teacher of the Bodhran for 14 yrs, many of his students have gone on to take the US Championship and have competed in the All Ireland, Fleadh.  He is currently a member of the local Celtic group, Kitchen Jam Band.
