African Vacation Results in Fortuitous Meeting

When Laurie and Rod Barker were invited to join a small group traveling to Africa on a photographic safari, they had no idea it would end up being the start of a new chapter for the historic Strater Hotel. The consummate hotelier, Mr. Barker is always interested in dining and lodging, and made it a point to meet each of the friendly and well-trained staff at the Breezes Resort in Zanzibar—their home base for several days. On the last day, after meeting everyone except the executive chef, out from the kitchen came Chef Arnold Safari. His beaming smile and warm personality were impossible to ignore, though his talent as a chef was what really impressed the Barkers. Now, just several years later, Durango and the Strater Hotel are Chef Safari’s homebase.
