The Barker Family
The Barker Family Early Years
Earl A. Barker Senior launched what was to become a family legacy by purchasing the Strater Hotel in 1926. He guided the company for 28 years before handing the reins to his son Earl Junior in 1954. Earl Junior and his wife Jentra carried the torch proudly for many years initiating an aggressive revitalization of the hotel including a nationwide search for American Victorian walnut antiques. In addition, they added contemporary conveniences to update services for their guests. Earl Jr. managed the property for 30 years until the mid-1980s when the Strater’s current driving force and his son, Rod Barker (President and CEO) assumed leadership of the hotel.
The Barker Family Today
Rod and his wife Laurie continue the family’s commitment to renovation and state-of-the-art services, proud stewards of a property that grows more charming each year through their thoughtful care. In 2012 they spearheaded a new endeavor called the Strater Hotel Special Room Dedication Project where each of the hotel’s 93 rooms is being named after individuals, families, and institutions that have and continue to impact the founding and development of Durango and its surrounding areas.
